How was Jesus the same, and different, than us?

In this post we are looking at similarities and differences between us as human beings and Jesus as our Saviour. There are many other articles we have already posted on varying subjects that cover how we should walk in life and the steps needed for salvation which link into the thoughts below.

How was Jesus like us?

  • He was born of a woman – Luke 1:30-33 – “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
  • He was tempted like us –  Hebrew 4:15 – “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
  • Although he was the Son of God, and had the Holy Spirit, or the power of God, he was still a man  Philippians 2:8 – “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
  • He was capable of all emotions –  Gospel of John 1:14 –  In addition to possessing a divine-like nature, Jesus Christ was also flesh and blood a human being. He thus shared with us the full range of human emotion

How was Jesus different?

  • Jesus Christ is unique as the only begotten Son of God  – Luke 1:35 – “The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God’.”
  • Jesus Christ is extraordinary in that He is eternal. He existed from eternity past, He exists in the present, and He will exist for all eternity in the future . 1 John 1:1-3 – “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”
  • Jesus Christ is special because He is the only Way to the Father  –  1 Timothy 2:5,6 – “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.”
  • Jesus Christ is unique in that He has the power to give life to whom He will  – John 5:21,22: “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son.”
  • God’s goal for all believers is for us to be like Jesus – Romans 8:28-30 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Even so come Lord Jesus!
