How is what is currently happening in the Middle East relevant to you?

Social media in any form has been full of unsavory events happening around the world this week. Every country seems to have its own man-made turmoil. It is sad to see innocent people getting caught in the cross fire of warring groups and we pray for their safety and security. Whilst many folks are surprised that these disasters are unfolding, we have seen that these things were predicted long ago in the Bible. Therefore we see it as part of Bible prophecy. Of course, it saddens us to see so many lives being destroyed yet to us this brings us one step closer to Jesus returning to this sad earth and restoring the earth to its former glory. We know that God cares for all his creation and is distressed to see pain and suffering caused by people and wants to see all of His creation relieved from the toils of stress, war and disease.

The Bible tells us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” God wants us to be part of His plan for everlasting life.

The Bible makes many references to the upcoming peace on earth. Psalm 72:1 describes an earth in which peace and plenty will abound. “Give the king your justice, O God, your righteousness to the royal son with. He will judge your people in righteousness, the poor with justice… In his days the righteous will flourish and peace, till the moon is no more!”

The Bible assures us that God will provide a solution to the problem of world peace. There will indeed come a world leader, who will be perfectly fitted for the task; a man who has already proved himself worthy because of his supreme wisdom, and his boundless love and concern for all. That man is the Lord Jesus Christ. Only he who loves his fellow men is fit to rule over them, and Jesus Christ certainly did so. The solution to the problem of world peace is the promise that the Lord Jesus will return.

The coming of Jesus will be the most tremendous thing that has ever happened. It will change the lives of all who live on earth. So we are bound to ask, when will this happen? We do not know the exact date. Jesus himself said in Matthew 24:36, “of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels in heaven, but my Father only”.

What signs are there that today we are living in the last days you may ask?

The Bible says that in the last days:

  • The Jews will return to the land of Israel. This happened in 1948.
  • Israel will become a nation again. Jerusalem is now the capital city of the Jews since 1967.
  • Jerusalem will be freed from its enemies. In May 1967, the Jews fought the six-day war, and freed Jerusalem from its enemies. The city is no longer “trodden down of the Gentiles” but is in the hands of the Jews.

Now you can see how we feel that we are close to Jesus returning. Events are unfolding in front of our eyes. In the Bible is a promise that there will come a time of permanent peace, when Jesus returns as king. If we believe in Jesus Christ and try to obey his commandments, we have hope of being saved from death, and being given eternal life.

Every day this verse from Luke chapter 21:26 flows through our minds, “…men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.” In these days, men are afraid! They are afraid of nuclear war, and nuclear accidents, terrorism, hi-jacking, violent robbery, kidnapping, vandalism, and feel there is no way out! But there is!!

In Luke chapter 21:27 we read, “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory”. Surely we are getting very close to the time when the Lord will come.

The ‘time of trouble’ we are living in shows how near we are to the Lord’s return. Israel is surrounded by enemies. The Arab nations are determined to wipe out the Jewish nation and re-possess the land which they consider is theirs. There is continual strife and warfare on Israel’s borders.

The Arabs consider that they have a claim to the land, but God promised that land long ago to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants for an everlasting possession. The bitter struggle goes on, and all nations will at last be drawn into this war. That is when Christ will return. The scene is set his return is near.
